Visualize your important research for the world

Warbler Creative specializes in creating biomedical, medical, and scientific illustrations — with thought and care in every detail. Our graphic design strengths also ensure special attention to figure consistency, layout, and hierarchy for easier viewer comprehension. Most often hand drawn art and vector graphics are combined; however, our other traditional techniques such as graphite, pen, or watercolor also result in gorgeous illuminating works.

Our most common services are listed here — but as the name implies, we’re up for just about any creative challenge.

“In every instance, Caitlin is able to absorb scientific summaries that were rarely adjusted for laypeople and quickly translate it not only into an easily digestible idea, but also an illustration that anyone could understand. She is incredibly professional throughout the process, and everyone who worked with her was so happy to do so. Researchers from Harvard, Johns Hopkins, MIT, and Columbia have all requested to continue using her illustrations in their talks.

I have nothing but the highest respect and recommendation for Caitlin’s work, and have been so lucky to work with her. I recommend her to any scientist looking for illustration assistance.”

What is the scientific illustration commission process?

  • Step 1

Start with an introductory meeting (or email!) to discuss your needs. You know your research best, so you’ll be the guiding force for main concepts. Past illustrations, data/photos/imagery of findings, and examples of styles you love all help. The best way to convey your idea is to sketch what you’re thinking — no judgement of artistic skill! A deposit is required to start.

  • Step 2

Warbler Creative makes an initial sketch, if starting from scratch. We can also reorganize or “clean up” figures to optimize readability, make illustrations consistent, or create cohesive branding. The first sketch will likely come with a couple questions to help us make sure we’re on the right track.

  • Step 3

Review and provide feedback — on accuracy and clarity, but also what you think of the artistic elements and overall look. It can be helpful to present to your lab supervisor, but also colleagues who aren’t as intimately familiar with your work. This helps us check accuracy as well as comprehension for those with “fresh eyes”.

  • Step 4

We revise the illustration with feedback from step 3, and cycle between these steps until complete. Once final payment is made, all final files are provided in your desired format (Illustrator, PDF, JPG, PNG, EPS, or SVG available). Let us know when they’re published too — we love to see illustrations in the wild!
